Sony made a HUGE bet with PS Now, streaming is the future so it seems. Is probably true that bring back to life that backward compatibility could a pain in the arse, but there's no logical excuse other to force the consumer to get their services and forget and probably bury that nostalgic *what if..we can run PS3 games discs with a Next-gen console*.
Sony isn't interested in directly offering backward compatibility so PlayStation 4 gamers can play their PlayStation 3 titles on the new generation console. However, Sony wants gamers to check out the PlayStation Now streaming subscription service that provides access to hundreds of PS3 games.

There are some PS4 gamers and media members that think Sony should investigate rolling out a backward compatibility feature for the PS4 - just to make gamers happy. Sony has worked hard to create a good gaming ecosystem, trying to keep sometimes fickle fans happy.

If it doesn't offer backward compatibility, Sony runs the risk of leaving gamers disappointed, though with other methods to play PS3 titles - for free or paid rental - I think the Japanese electronics company has done enough already.

Sony initially seemed skeptical of Microsoft's announcement regarding the Xbox One's backward compatibility, doubting whether it's possible - and that it would involve "lots of engineering effort."

Regardless of what PlayStation gamers want, it seems unlikely that Sony will try to follow in Microsoft's footsteps anytime soon.

can someone pls explain why backwards compatibility would only work for certain games like on for example the xbox one. I just don't understand if they can get backwards compatibility to work why wont it work for all games, these are consoles not pc's and I don't get that.

      ps4 ans xbq = x86/64

= sony is too lazy to get x games recompiled to work on ps4 while xb1 will get x games recompiled for xbq1

Its like some have said:... They should add a ps3 disc check to the ps now library and that way you can stream games you own from your ps3 library to your ps4. Although I say take it a step further and games that are remastered for the system like TLOU, GOWIII, GTAV you should also be able to pop-in your ps3 disc and get a voucher to dl the remastered versions of those games and be able to play them...

Im curious to how hard it really is... When Sony removed Other OS/Backwards compatibility from the PS3 and said it will never work on PS3 Slim etc, but when the PS3 was opened up to everyone Devs out there did, which meant Sony was lying, when the PS4 is opened to us i wonder how long it takes a Dev/Devs to do it and if it really is as hard as Sony said it will be.

And that’s the only reason I'm not gonna buy a PS4. I understand (somehow) that they don’t want people to buy PS3 Games for the PS4, but there is absolutely no reason to exclude PS2 games (besides they are trying to make money with their streaming service).

Heck, even most PCs can emulate many PS2 titles smoothly with PCSX2, why should it not work on a PS4? I can’t deny that Sony only disappoints me since they removed OtherOS.
